Festival artists

Participating artists in Tarnovia Flute Summer festival are illustrious Polish, British, German and Italian authorities, who allow students to uderstand the intricacies of the flute performances and gain required motivation for the further development. Those are (in the alphabetical order):

Ian Clarke

Ian Clarke is acknowledged as one of the leading player/composers in the flute world. His compositions are performed across the globe and these wide-ranging published works have established themselves as some of the most exciting flute repertoire of today and are being embraced by internationally acclaimed performers, syllabuses, teachers, colleges & students alike.

Ian has performed as a featured guest soloist and teacher at major conventions throughout the world including events in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Iceland, Japan, many European countries including France (2022) and Germany (2023), and numerous times for the NFA (National Flute Association) in the USA and for the British Flute Society (BFS) in the UK where he lives. He premiered his new concerto for flute & strings at the 2017 Minneapolis, NFA convention, and in 2024 premiered new flute and concert band arrangements of several Clarke works in San Antonio. 2023 saw the publication of ‘A Winged Brocade’ and 2024 ‘Soft Rain and White Staircase. His acclaimed CD ‘Within’ has been one the flute world’s best sellers and his album Deep Blue reached the top 10 in the UK Classical Artist Chart; thought to be a first for an album of original flute music. He has given master-classes at many of the leading music conservatoires including London’s Royal Academy of Music (RAM) & Guildhall School of Music & Drama (GSMD) through to New York’s Juilliard & MSM (Manhattan School of Music) and in countries around the globe. In his career he has performed in genres ranging from classical opera to a guest appearance with rock group Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson. He had a long relationship with Flutewise (UK) including as their artist of the year and Ian has been a guest artist at many of the top flute courses. Along with RAM’s Clare Southworth, he co-led the Woldingham International Summer School for many years and was a regular artist at the Complete 21st Century Flutist at California Summer Arts. Ian is also a founder member of the annual Grolloo Flute Session team in the Netherlands and continues as a long-standing artist on the Scottish International Flute Summer School. Through leading, co-leading and contributing to a myriad of flute events, Ian has enjoyed working with all ages and stages in flute-land and beyond.

A prize-winning student, Ian studied part-time with Simon Hunt, Averil Williams and Kate Lukas of the Guildhall School of Music, London. He concurrently studied Mathematics at Imperial College, London graduating with Honours. Ian is professor of flute at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Ian has worked extensively with musician/composer Simon Painter writing, producing and performing music for film & television. Ian is an International Miyazawa Flute artist.

Matvey Demin

Born in Siberia in 1993, Matvey started to study flute with his grandmother, continuing his education in Hannover and Munich with Prof. Andrea Lieberknecht.

Matvey is the first flutist in history who won the 1st prize in woodwinds category of the world famous Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2019.

He is also a prize winner of such competitions as international «Aeolus» competition, ARD International Music competition (Munich), international flute competition in Krakow, Unisa International music competition and many other competitions. At the age of 20 Matvey joined Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich as Co-Principal Solo flute, where he worked under the baton of such prominent conductors such as Paavo Järvi, David Zinman, Bernhard Haitink, Franz Welser-Möst. Since 2022/2023 season he holds a Principal flute position in the SWR Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart under the direction of Teodor Currentzis.

Mario Notaristefano

Mario Notaristefano is the principal piccolo at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. He initially studied under the guidance of Michele Marasco and later with Andrea Oliva at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. An essential milestone in his artistic journey was working with Mario Caroli, who significantly influenced his musical growth.

He pursued studies with Caroli both at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana and the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg im Breisgau. Recepient of the second prize at the Cimarosa International Flute Competition, Mario has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles including like SWR Südwestrundfunks Symphonieorchester, Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, NDR Radiophilarmonie, Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester, Ensemble Aventure.

Passionate about education, Mario dedicated himself to teaching flute at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen and Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg. Driven by an unwavering commitment to deepen his musical research and interpretation, Mario has written essays for notable publications including the philosophical journal “Studi di Estetica” from the Alma Mater Studiorium University of Bologna, the e-journal “De Musica” affiliated with the Department of Philosophy at the University of Milan, as well as the periodic publication “Falaut”.

dr Maria Gromińska

principal flutist of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic Orchestra in Kraków, with a doctorate in art obtained in 2024 at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, where she has been teaching since 2022. In 2018, she graduated with distinction from the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź.

A graduate of the Orchestra Academy of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław. Her emotionally profound, virtuoso interpretations have won the favor of international audiences and competition jurors. She is a laureate of numerous awards and distinctions, e.g. 1st place at the Ventus Optimus International Wind Instrument Competition, 3rd place at the Finalis National Wind Instrument Competition and others. In solo recitals, together with pianist Yang Xu-Czaja, she prefers the repertoire of Polish composers from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as contemporary pieces, often premiering them. She perfected her musical sensitivity and performance skills under the watchful eye of outstanding flautists such as Mario Caroli, Janos Balint, Ashildur Haraldsdottir, Carlo Jans, Moshe Aaron Epstein, Carlos Bruneel, Wissam Boustany, Wally Hase, Jean-Michel Tanguy. Through participation in and organization of flute events, she established cooperation with such flautists as Patrick Gallois, Ashildur Haraldsdottir, Nicola Mazzanti and Jorn Schau. She was a scholarship holder of the Marshal of the Łódź Voivodeship and the Rector of the Academy of Music in Łódź. Since 2019, she has been a co-founder of the Fluenti Flute Ensemble, with which interdisciplinary project activity is focused on unconventional repertoire, using the full flute instrumentation (piccolo, alto flute, bass flute).

dr hab. Urszula Janik-Lipińska prof. UMFC

Her flute education began in the Henryk Wieniawski State Secondary School of Music in Łódź, in the class taught by Antoni Wierzbiński, with whom she also later studied in the Academy of Music in Łódź, graduating with a distinction in 1984. She further developed her abilities in the Paris Conservatory with Alain Marion, who funded a one-year scholarship for her as an award in the International Jean-Pierre Rampal Flute Competition in Paris. She continued her studies in Paris for another year as a French government scholarship holder, also participating in this period in master classes in Nice (with Alain Marion), Bayreuth (with Milan Munclinger) and Duszniki (with Jerzy Mrozik).

During her studies, she took part in a number of flute competitions, receiving numerous awards and distinctions, such as: the 1st prize and special award in the National Flute Competition in Włoszkowice, the 4th prize in the International Flute Competition in Ancona (Italy), the 4th prize in the 1st International Flute Competition in Kobe (Japan), and the 6th prize in the International Johann Sebastian Bach Flute Competition in Leipzig.

Directly after her studies, the artist became the flute section leader and soloist in the Polish Chamber Orchestra (now – the Sinfonia Varsovia). Urszula Janik’s artistic personality developed through collaboration, as part of her work in the orchestra, with the greatest musical personalities of our time, such as Martha Argerich, Charles Dutoit, Sir James Galway, Irena Grafenauer, Leopold Hager, Mischa Maisky, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Krzysztof Penderecki, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Mstislav Rostropovich. A special place among the musicians performing with the orchestra was occupied by Yehudi Menuhin, under whose baton she also played as a soloist.

Urszula Janik has performed with numerous other symphony orchestras in Poland, and throughout Europe as a soloist with the Sinfonia Varsovia. Her debut took place in Warsaw Philharmonic, where she played the solo flute part in Andrzej Panufnik’s Sinfonia concertante under the baton of Jerzy Katlewicz. She also recorded the same work with the Great Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio and Television, alongside other compositions recorded for the Polish Radio and Television archive. She took part in a recording project, released on CD in March 2002, featuring chamber music by Claude Debussy, Jacques Ibert, Maurice Ravel and Albert Roussel.

Since January 2002, Urszula Janik has been the flute section leader and soloist in Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

Urszula Janik-Lipińska is also a teacher. In 2002-2014, she was recognized as a flute teacher at the Academy of Music in Łódź, and since 2013, she has been a professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, where in 2016-2018 she also held the position of vice-dean of the Instrumental Faculty.

She also conducts numerous flute master classes and workshops, e.g. in Nowy Sącz and Sarbinów. She serves on the juries of national flute competitions and auditions. In May 2010 she was invited to perform and hold flute workshops at the 8th International Flute Festival in Slovenia, alongside such stars of flute music as Peter-Lukas Graf and Emmanuel Pahud. The flutist is an artistic ambassador of YAMAHA. In 2022 Urszula Janik-Lipińska was honored by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage with the "Gloria Artis" medal.

dr Natalia Jarząbek

Natalia Jarząbek graduated with a great distinction from the Academy of Music in Kraków in the class of Prof. Dr h.c. Barbara Świątek – Żelazna and was a student of Hochschule für Musik in Weimar in the class of Prof. Wally Hase. She also graduated from the Jagiellonian University with master degree in mathematics. Currently she is currently a principal flutist of the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra, PhD student at the Academy of Music in Kraków and an orchestral excerpts teacher at The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. Since 2022 Natalia is an Artist of Miyazawa Flutes.

The topic of her research is the problem of circular breathing in performing wind instruments. As a specialist in this field she inspires many contemporaries composers who they dedicated numerous works to her. Also she is the author — together with her teacher, prof. Barbara of the book Infinity. Circular Breathing and the course book Infinity with exercises and pieces to practice this technique, released in December 2020. The CD Infinity - with pieces requiring the use of circular breathing - was recorded with the Belgian pianist Emmy Wils at the Krzysztof Penderecki European Music Center in Lusławice and released by DUX in September 2019.

Natalia gave many lectures about circular breathing around the world (i.e. The National Flute Association 2023 in Phoenix,, the Festival Universitario de Flauta Transversa in México 2019, the Alexander Arutiunian International Wind Festival 2019).

Her abilities are highly regarded on international competitions. She received many prizes, scholarships and awards appreciating her achievements. Natalia performed and was teaching at festivals such as: British Flute Society ’s Flutastique! Festival, the 2017 Adams Flute Festival, the Festival Universitario de Flauta Transversa in México, the Alexander Arutiunian International Wind Festival, the 31st International Festival of Krakow Composers, Wawel o Zmierzchu Festival and the Music Festival in Łańcut. She has worked closely with numerous symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles, performing in renowned venues around the world.

Since 2017, Natalia has also been a flutist of the Cracow Golden Quintet, with whom she won the 2nd prize at The Stanislaw Moniuszko International Polish Music Competition in Rzeszów, 2019. The ensemble recorded a CD Polish Wind Quintets, nominated to the Fryderyk 2020 Award.

dr Jan Krzeszowiec

He graduated with honours from the Wrocław Karol Lipiński Music Acade­my at Professor Jerzy Mrozik’s class. For prominent achieve­ments, he was awarded a honorary Primus Inter Pares title by the Vice-Chancellor’s Council.

He was awarded at numerous flute contests at home and abroad, including the ones in Warsaw, Cracow, Bucharest and Città di Aversa. He has won Ministry of Culture and Art, and Silesian Voivideship scholarships.

Chamber music is an important part of his artistic activity. He is a member of LutosAir Quintet woodwind quintet, with which he regularly performs on Polish stages and abroad.

Since 2001, he has been a flutist-soloist in the Wrocław Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, currently the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic. He is employed as an assistant professor at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. In the years 2005-2023 he lecturer at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, where in 2019 he obtained a doctorate in musical arts. He has received distinguished awards for recordings for such music publishing houses as Deutsche Grammophon, ECM, CD Accord and DUX. His last album, recorded under the baton of maestro Jerzy Maksymiuk together with his brothers - Szymon and Adam and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, was released in 2022 by the CD Accord.

prof. Ewa Murawska

Ewa Murawska is a flutist, soloist, chamber musician and professor at Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, where she also is a Leader of Woodwind Department. She completed her flute studies with honors with Dorota Karaniewicz-Biedny (Poznań), Patrick Gallois (Paris) and Andrzej Łęgowski (Poznań); she was also a student of Henrik Svitzer (Odense).

She has won international music competitions (e.g. Uelzen – 3rd prize and Paris – Premier Prix l’Unanimité) and scholarships: Polish – a.o. from the Minister of Culture, Minister of Science and Higher Education (twice), President of the City of Poznań, Marshal of the Province of Wielkopolska, as well as the governments of Italy, France, Germany and Denmark, and the Scholarship and Training Fund. In 2009 she won the competition “100 Young Creative European Talents” held by the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.

She has been giving concerts (more than 400) in Poland and abroad (Germany, France, Iceland, Norway, Greece, Sweden, Italy, etc.) and is a jury member in international competitions (Poland, France, Germany among others). She has also recorded 13 CDs, a.o. in collaboration with Pierre-Yves Artaud and Áshildur Haraldsdóttir. She published 13 books (including cycle Playing the Flute with Chopin, Grieg and Sveinsson) and was the leader of 29 international scientist, didactic, artistic and social projects (like Baltic Art Camp 2022). She is also a Chairwoman of the Board od Event Culture Fund.

Tomasz Sierant

Polish flute player Tomasz Sierant was born in 1995 in Łódź. He started his musical education in 2008 and from the very beginning he participated successfully in regional and nationalcompetitions. He received his education in Poland, Belgium, and Switzerland; working with the renowned teachers UrszulaJanik, Carlos Bruneel, and Felix Rengglli.

From the beginning of his studies Tomasz gained extensive orchestra experience. He started with the youth projects I, Culture and Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and continued in professional orchestras such as the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Opernhaus Zurich - where he was an academist. He is currently Principal Flute with the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, Chemnitz. 

In 2019 Tomasz made his solo debut playing the Jolivet concerto with the prestigious Kammerorchester Basel. He has also distinguished himself as a prize-winner in numerous international competitions; including the Cluj International Music Competition (3rd prize), the Carl Nielsen Competition, and the Kobe Competition. In addition, Tomasz was awarded 1st prize in the EUROFLUTE Solo Competition 2020. In 2023 Tomasz was awarded the 1st price at the International Flute Competition in Krakow.

Hanna Turonek - piccolo flute

Graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw in the flute class of Professor Elżbieta Gajewska. She refined her skills by taking part in the International Flute Symposium in Freiburg im Breisgau together with such famous artists as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Robert Aitken and Aurele Nicolet. She also participated in the Master Class of Interpretation in Duszniki-Zdrój, headed by Professor Jerzy Mrozik and Peter Ode. Turonek is a laureate of many national and international music competitions, including the V. Bucchi competition in Rome, the M. Canals competition in Barcelona and competitions in Duino (Italy) and the 1st Flute Competition in Cracow.

She is a flutist and piccoloist of Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra and lecturer at the Sinfonia Varsovia Academy, a project that resulted in the success of playing orchestral music. She also teaches piccolo flute at the K. Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow.

Hanna Turonek specialises in playing the piccolo, performing, among others, Vivaldi’s concertos from Op.10 (Il Gardellino, La Tempesta di Mare, La Notte et al.). She was the first Polish flute piccolo player to perform the Concerto for Piccolo and Symphony Orchestra Op.50 by American Composer Lowell Liebermann. The first performance of the concerto took place on 13 April 2007 during the Świętokrzyskie Music Days in Kielce, with Jan Miłosz Zarzycki conducting.

Hanna Turonek is actively involved in concert activity in Poland and abroad, performing solo, chamber and orchestral works. She has performed in nearly every country in Europe, as well as in Asia, North America, South America and Australia under the direction of such renowned conductors as Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Charles Dutoit, Mstislav Rostropovich, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Jacek Kaspszyk, Jerzy Semkow, Antoni Wit and Marc Minkowski.

adt dr Łukasz Zimnik

A graduate of the Academy of Music in Katowice in the class of prof. Stanisław Michalik. He mastered his skills at master courses, including with Andreas Blau, Jean-Claude Gerard, Irena Grafenauer, Henrik Svitzer, Barbara Gisler-Haase and Peter Holtstag. He is the laureate of the National Competition of Woodwind Instruments in Olsztyn.

In the years 1991-1996 he worked as a flutist in the State Silesian Philharmonic, and in the years 1992-1995 in the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1996, he has been the first flutist of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. He constantly cooperates with the "Sinfonietta Cracovia" orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy AUKSO. He also performs with NOSPR chamber musicians and the Katowice Academy of Music. As a soloist, he performed with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Silesian Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonietta Cracovia, Camerata Impuls, Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, AUKSO Chamber Orchestra and the Academic Baroque Orchestra. He participated as a soloist and chamber musician in many festivals, including in international harp festivals and the festival "Silesian Quartet and his guests" He played under such conductors as Krzysztof Penderecki, Sir Neville Marriner, Christof von Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, Kurt Masur, Leonard Slatkin, Lawrence Foster, Stanisław Skrowaczewski with soloist included Marta Argerich, Krystian Zimermann, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Daniel Barenboim, Maxim Vengerov, Piotr Anderszewski. He recorded Bolesław Szabelski concerto for flute and orchestra for Polish Radio. In 2015 he obtained a PhD in music. Currently, he lectures at the Academy of Music in Katowice as an adjunct.

Dominika Peszko

dr Dominika Peszko

Dominika Peszko (born 19.11.1988 in Rzeszow, Poland) – the pianist, chamber musician and teacher. Doctor of Musical Arts. She graduated from the Academy of Music in Krakow in the piano class of Andrzej Pikul and under his guidance she got her PhD in 2017. She perfected her skills during the masterclasses with acclaimed pianists: Paul Badura-Skoda, Kevin Kenner, Boris Berman, Dina Yoffe and others. In 2015-2018 she has been a participant of the Young Talents Development Programme – Opera Academy at the National Opera-Grand Theater in Warsaw, where she has taken part in masterclasses of Helmut Deutsch, Eytan Pessen, Matthias Rexroth, Neil Shicoff, Edith Wiens, Tobias Truniger and Paul Plummer.

As a soloist, she has performed with the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra, the Beethoven Academy Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Lublin Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Krakow Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Opole Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Rzeszow Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of Tadeusz Baird Philharmonic in Zielona Gora, and others. She has collaborated with conductors such as Paweł Przytocki, Mirosław Jacek Błaszczyk, Wojciech Rodek, Rafał Kloczko and Sebastian Perłowski among others.

Dominika Peszko received the scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland (2009, 2019) and the prestigious Ars Quaerendi Prize (together with her Master, Małgorzata Walewska).

In 2019 she made the premiere recording of Kazimierz Lubomirski's complete works. The four-disc album contains all the composer's piano works (35) and all of the art songs (35), recorded together with Małgorzata Walewska – mezzo , Andrzej Lampert – tenor, Hasmik Sahakyan – soprano and Paweł Trojak – baritone.

In 2020, an album of songs by Emanuel Kania was released by the DUX label (DUX 7603), recorded together with the bass-baritone Dawid Biwo. She has premiered numerous new, experimental music, often with the use of multimedia tools and is a member of the "Muzyka Centrum" Artistic Association of performers of contemporary music. With the beginning of the corona pandemic Dominika Peszko started to study the monumental cycle of Olivier Messiaen Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant-Jésus, which she performed in April 2022 during the 34. Krakow International Festival of Composers. She is the third performer of this cycle in Poland (after Eugeniusz Knapik and Jerzy Godziszewski) and the first Polish female pianist to take up this challenge.

As a chamber musician, Dominika Peszko performed in numerous European countries and in Republic of South Africa. She particularly favours vocal lyric and collaborating with singers in the capacity of their tutor-coach. Working alongside vocalists entails both performing on stage and accompanying the singers in domestic and overseas competitions. In 2013 Dominika started work at the Faculty Vocal Performance and Acting at The Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow.

Caroline Clarke

Caroline Clarke

Caroline Clarke trained as a flautist at the Royal Academy of Music, London having been awarded a junior scholarship from 12-18 years old before continuing full time. She enjoyed varied orchestral positions including the RAM symphony orchestra, Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra and Holland Park Opera Orchestra, all in London. Caroline also enjoyed teaching the flute for many years whilst maintaining a growing interest and study in health, wellness and movement. Eventually she re-trained in Seasonal yoga, tai chi, and advanced Yin becoming a Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher. She leads regular and private individual classes using her own fresh approach to functional movement with special focus on slow but strong movement combined with the breath. When working with flute players she is able to fuse her background as a musician and yoga/tai chi teacher to facilitate freer movement, and use of the breath.

Her classes weave in yogic movement along with flowing tai chi to achieve a newfound sense of fluidity and spaciousness in the body, whilst tapping into a calmer and more centred space..

Caroline lives in Surrey, UK with her fluting husband.

Michał Preinl

Physiotherapist, manual therapist, musician
He obtained his master's degree in physiotherapy at the Jerzy Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education in Katowice. He graduated from the Secondary State Music School. Władysław Żeleński in Krakow in the percussion class. Certified MT1 Manual Therapist. Founder of FizjoMuz - the first physiotherapy office in Poland specializing in the prevention of occupational overload, therapy of injuries and dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system of musicians.

When working with patients, he combines the experience of a musician with the knowledge and practice of a physiotherapist. He constantly improves his qualifications by participating in numerous courses and conferences, the leading one being Orthopedic Manual Therapy according to IFOMPT standards. He runs his own FizjoMuz office in Krakow, which is a physiotherapy and manual therapy center created especially for musicians.
